the help of Members of the Grand Council and other Pythians ran

Volunteers
Present
at the Knights on wheels were Town of Clarkstown
Supervisor Alexander J. Gromack and
Grand Chancellor Robert Kaufman
The
Knights on Wheels is a regional community service project.
Started in 1997, this annual event brings together physically
and mentally challenged adults – many in wheel chairs -- for a
day of outdoor fun in Rockland county. The Pythian lodges across
the lower Hudson Valley region come out to host “clients” from
adult and supervised living units around Rockland and
Westchester counties. The day is filled with games and a
barbeque. Our aim is to bring some happiness to as many people
as we can and by the smiles on the faces of those participating,
it’s a success.

Order Knights of Pythias Recognizes
Corey Bearak for Volunteer Service to the Community
At
the Knights of Pythias Domain of New York Grand Council meeting,
Monday,
February 7, 2011, in Garden City Park, Supreme Master at Arms
Sir Alan Krell (l) and Grand
Chancellor Michael Sukenick (r) of the Domain of New York
present a Supreme Chancellor's
Certificate of Honor to Corey Bearak, Secretary of FDR Lodge
#613 (Brooklyn) for volunteer service
in the community. Then-Supreme Chancellor, Sir Dan Cowan had set
a goal of two million (2,000,000)
volunteer hours given by members of the Pythian Order for the
period August, 2008 to July, 2010. To
encourage volunteerism he awarded Certificates of Honors to
those who performed one hundred (100) or more volunteer
hours. During the period in question,
Bearak, a Government and Public
Affairs Counselor, estimated that he gave over 1500
hours during that period to nine organizations that serve
the community, its seniors and youth..
The Order of Knights
of Pythias is an international, non-sectarian fraternal
order, established in 1864 in
Washington, DC, by Justus H. Rathbone and was the first
fraternal order to be chartered by an
Act of Congress. The distinguishing
principles
of this fraternal organization are
"FRIENDSHIP, CHARITY and BENEVOLENCE". Domains of the Order
exist in most states and provinces,
and subordinate lodges are located in many cities and towns
across the United States and Canada.
The New York Grand Lodge supports
charities,
including the Pythian Humanitarian Fund,
Juvenile Diabetes Research Association, Pythian Camp, Dr.
Morris Smoller Social Service Fund
(which supports health and elder care institutions) and the
Special Olympics.
The certificate signed by then Supreme Chancellor Dan Cowan
reads:
"Know Ye All,
That,
To Corey Bearak
Has Been Awarded The Coveted Supreme Chancellor's Certificate of
Honor
For outstanding devotion to duty and Pythian ideals performed
with enthusiasm
and zeal;
For dedicated service to your community by charitable acts of
volunteerism;
For demonstrating acts of Benevolence through community service;
For displaying individual responsibility in he generous donation
of time and
energy to bring forth great praise for our Order, and
For exemplifying the cardinal precepts of Friendship, Charity
and Benevolence
that has graced the spirit of Pythians since 1864.
It is for these reasons, that I, as Supreme Chancellor of the
Supreme Lodge
Knights of Pythias, hereby bestows upon you this unique honor
for the unselfish
service you have rendered through your tireless efforts for
volunteerism to your
community.
(dated) July 1, 2009
(signed) Dan Cowan, Supreme Chancellor

In
his message to the Domain, Grand Chancellor Michael Sukenick
charged his team with creating and implementing special projects
to help spread Pythianism throughout New York. Some of the team
members decided to use this opportunity to engage the lodges in
new and different charitable actions.
As part of our domain's charitable actions, DGC Jeremy Seideman
(2nd District) organized a food drive to benefit City Harvest.
City Harvest (http://www.cityharvest.org) is the one of the
first food rescue organizations, whose mission is to bring food
from people and restaurants to those who need it most. Lodges
collected non-perishable food which was then donated to City
Harvest to be distributed to those in need.
With the help of DGC Brian Kohn (46th District), Jeremy rallied
the lodges in Brooklyn, and they have collected over 600 lbs of
food in a few short weeks to donate to City Harvest for the
holidays.

Barbecu
for the handicapped
It was Sunday morning. It was cloudy. The forecast says there is
a 40% chance of rain. Forty sounds good, so the committee was at
the Bernard Fineson Handicapped Center ready to roll.
In a new area that is very pretty the
cooks went to work. The two barbeque grills were burning and the
hot dogs and hamburgers were cooking
away. As it got warm in the hazy sun, the
residents were gathering inside
the new building. The servers were in their positions ready to
serve the hot dogs, hamburger and cheeseburgers, coleslaw and
potato salad. There were drinks, diet and non diet.
There was water too.
For dessert there was ices, watermelon, and cakes. No one went
home hungry.
